Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis)

Atopic dermatitis (eczema) is a common, chronic skin condition characterized by dry, scaly, itchy skin. Atopic dermatitis commonly develops in early childhood and the symptoms may lessen as the child grows older. Atopic dermatitis has a genetic predisposition and is more common in individuals with a personal or family history of atopic dermatitis, asthma, or hay fever type allergies. There are a large number of factors which can cause a flare of the atopic dermatitis to include stress, changes in weather, and certain allergens.

In individuals with atopic dermatitis (eczema) is important to maintain gentle bathing and moisturization to help keep the skin barrier intact. Gentle bathing consists of using lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser. Immediately following the bath, any prescription medications should be applied to the affected areas followed by a layer of moisturizer to the entire body.

In addition to proper bathing and moisturization there are several prescription treatments that can be utilized to improve a patient's symptoms. These treatments include topical medications, oral medications, and phototherapy.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic, inherited skin condition that occurs in patients of all ages. It is characterized by red patches of skin that develop a white/silvery scale. It can occur anywhere on the skin but is most common on the elbows, knees and scalp. Occasionally individuals with psoriasis will develop psoriatic arthritis which causes pain and stiffness of certain joints.

Psoriasis can dramatically impact a person's quality-of-life and have a strong psychological effect. Fortunately, there have been many great advances in the treatment of psoriasis over the past several years resulting in the ability to control this disease and most persons. At lone star dermatology, we specialize in the treatment of psoriasis and offer the latest treatments available to include: topical medications, oral medications, injectable/biologic medications, phototherapy (full body/hand and foot) and Excimer laser therapy.

Rosacea

Rosacea is a common condition involving sun exposed skin mainly of the face. It most commonly presents as redness, swelling, pimples, small red veins, or cysts of the central face. Rosacea can also cause permanent enlargement of the nose termed rhinophyma. Occasionally it can involve the eyes resulting in an uncomfortable "gritty" or "itchy" sensation. Most individuals with rosacea also complain of sensitive, dry or easily irritated skin.

Although rosacea has a genetic component it can be worsened by certain environmental factors to include: sun exposure, heat, wind, stress, spicy foods, and alcohol. In individuals with rosacea gentle skin care and proper sun protection are very important. At lone star dermatology we have a wide array of treatments for rosacea to include: topical medications, oral medications, skin care products, and intense pulsed light/PhotoFacial.

Dysplastic Nevus

A dysplastic nevus is an atypical or abnormal mole. They are benign but have unusual features and may eventually develop into a melanoma skin cancer. The appearance of a dysplastic nevus is similar to that of a melanoma and normally a biopsy is necessary to differentiate these two entities.

Individuals with a history of a dysplastic nevus are at an increased risk of developing melanoma skin cancer. Regular dermatology visits with close monitoring of the skin along with monthly self skin examinations and proper sun protection are strongly recommended.

Actinic Keratoses

Actinic keratoses are pre-cancerous lesions that can develop into squamous cell skin cancers if left untreated. They are the result of cumulative sun exposure and normally are found on areas chronically exposed to the sun such as the head, arms, and hands. Actinic keratoses usually present as a rough or crusted spot that may be slightly tender or sensitive.

Early treatment is important because it is estimated that each lesion has approximately a 10% chance per year of becoming a squamous cell skin cancer. Treatment of actinic keratoses normally involves cryotherapy ("freezing" of the lesion) and at times the application of creams that can help to remove precancerous lesions that are too small to be detected. It is very important that individuals with a history of actinic keratoses receive regular skin checks and treatment to decrease the likelihood of these lesions developing into squamous cell skin cancers. Additionally, proper sun protection is important because continued sun exposure will increase the development of new lesions.
